A Promise Not To Break: Epilogue

This entry is part 18 of 18 in the series A Promise Not To Break

FIVE YEARS And yet the grave still looked knew. Halatang may nag-aalaga at nagmamahal sa taong nahihimlay doon. It tugged at Dave’s heart.

He smiled. She looked so much like her mother especially when she was looking so bored like that. Iminosyon niya itong lumapit.

“Tagal eh!” nagmamaktol nitong sagot. He laughed as he kissed her head.

“Hey, why don’t you play a little more? Marami pa namang kids sa playground, right?”

Umiling ito. “Dirty,” dahilan nito.

“Who’s dirty?” tanong ng isang boses sa likod nila. Sabay silang lumingon ni Sushi.

“Mommy!” sigaw nito sabay takbo sa three months pregnant niyang asawa.

I played naman.”

“But she just told me that she was getting bored,” kunwari’y sumbong ni Dave ng lumapit siya sa kanyang mag-ina.

Tinignan siya ng masama ng kanyang anak. “’Di naman, eh.”

“Oy, hindi daw, oh.”

“Hep-hep. “So who’s dirty?”

He shrugged. Si Sushi ang nagpresinta ng sagot. “Slide, mommy. Kids put yucky mud sa slide.”

Nagkunwari itong nashock sa sinabi ng anak. “Talaga?”

Seryosong tumango si Sushi. “Yes. So hindi na’ko nag-play. Sabi mo ‘di ba, yuck ang dirty.”

“Yes, baby. Yuck ang dirty,” sagot naman ng kanyang asawa with a smile. “Baby, why don’t you get your toys so we can put them in the car? Iniwan mo ba sila sa playground?” Tumango ito. “Okay, get them muna, ha? We’ll wait here.”

“Yes, mommy,” sagot naman ni Sushi as she ran back to the playground. Then his wife straightened to speak with him.

“So kumusta na si Mael?”

“Terrible. Carrie was of course, perfectly, okay.”

He hooked his arm around her waist. “I knew that man was a little too panicky,” he whispered with a smile sa tenga ng asawa niya. Humarap ito sa kanya.

“Nagsalita! Then she lowered her voice. “Or your face when they told you that I almost died.”

Hinigpitan niya ang hawak rito. “Prie, I’m always panicky when it comes to you,” sagot niya habang mabilis na dumaan sa kanyang isip ang mga nangyari five years ago.

His Prie.

Although unfortunately, only one month after his success, Dr. Harlington succumbed to heart failure himself. His ashes were buried with honors on the hospital’s grounds as he wished.

And because Prie needed to recover first and be constantly checked-up, napagdesisyunan na nilang mamalagi sa States. After a year, doon na rin sila nagpakasal.

“So you say,” taas-kilay na sabi nito.

“Ganyan talaga ‘pag nagmamahal ka. Nakakatakot.”

She smiled. “Better than nothing, right?”

“You bet,” sagot niya rito.

“I cleaned them!” masayang sabi nito. “I cleaned them, look.”

“Wow, oo nga,” segunda naman ni Prie. “You cleaned them all by yourself?”

Nagmamalaking tumango ito. “Yes, mommy!”

“At least the toys are clean,” natatawa niyang sagot sa tahimik na tanong nito.

Tumawa ito ng malakas. “Right.” Bumaling  ito ulit sa tuwang-tuwang si Sushi. “Come, baby.

“Daddy, carry me!”

“I want speg-hetti. Grandmama said she’ll cook speg-hetti when we come back.”

Nagkatawanan silang mag-asawa. Sushi was dearly spoiled by her grandmamma Lexa. “Sure, baby,” he said as they walked towards the car. He had never felt so contented with his life.

  1. In the story, Dave’s love for Prie seemed to be stronger than the love of Ismael for Prie; but, in real life it is the other way around. Love is selfless, it is not possessive, it endures all things and never keep accounts of injury. When you truly love someone, you’re willing to let go, you’ll think of that someone’s happiness first above all things. It is not jealous, it is not boastful.
Anyways, it’s just my opinion, you’ll never knew what would someone do for the ones they love. And maybe it feels good to know someone can stop living because of so much heartache. I only think that Dave doesn’t love properly, there is a big difference between love and delusion. Thankfully when the story was about to end, he suddenly change and got more mature.
Thank you writer, keep up the good work
